As Ivory Coast commemorated its 65th Independence Day on Thursday, the Prefect of the Poro region and Korhogo department, André Eponon Assoumou, used the occasion to urge citizens to embrace responsibility and uphold civic values ahead of the country’s high-stakes presidential election in October.
Addressing the public during celebrations in Korhogo on August 7, 2025, Mr. Eponon stressed the urgent need for peace and national unity during this politically sensitive period.
“National unity and peace must be our priorities as we approach these elections, which are crucial for the future of our country.
Every citizen, every political actor, must work towards an electoral process free of violence and in accordance with democratic principles,” he said.
His remarks come as political tensions simmer across the country.
With just two months to go before the vote, President Alassane Ouattara has confirmed his candidacy for re-election, while a number of opposition figures have been legally barred from running.
A major opposition coalition has announced plans to hold a protest march this Saturday in Abidjan, raising concerns over the potential for unrest.
Prefect Eponon underscored the importance of dialogue, tolerance, and cooperation between all parties, warning that any deviation from democratic conduct could jeopardize both national development and regional stability.
“Peaceful elections are essential for the development of Côte d’Ivoire and the stability of the Poro region,” he declared.
He reassured citizens that local authorities, working alongside national security forces, are committed to ensuring the electoral process unfolds without disruption. The prefect also encouraged youth and community leaders to take active roles in promoting peace and civic education.
Finally, Eponon called on political actors and their supporters to prioritise respect, responsibility, and open dialogue, reminding all Ivorians of their shared duty to preserve peace and protect the nation’s democratic progress.
