Mali’s Prime Minister and Minister of Territorial Administration and Decentralization, Major General Abdoulaye Maïga, touched down in Awaza on Tuesday, August 5, 2025, to attend the 3rd United Nations Conference on Landlocked Developing Countries.
Arriving at 6 a.m. local time—1 a.m. in Bamako—Prime Minister Maïga was greeted by Mali’s Ambassador to Russia and the Deputy Prime Minister of Turkmenistan responsible for economic affairs.
General Maïga is representing the President of the Transition at the high-level global forum, which brings together leaders from 32 landlocked developing countries (LLDCs), whose growth prospects are often hindered by geographical constraints and limited access to international markets.
The conference, officially opening today in the coastal city of Awaza, seeks to “rethink the global system” in support of LLDCs, whose economies face systemic disadvantages due to their lack of direct access to the sea.
These constraints often result in higher transport costs, trade barriers, and restricted participation in global value chains.
By participating in the summit, Mali aims to strengthen international cooperation and advocate for enhanced partnerships and tailored development strategies for landlocked nations.
The conference is expected to address key issues including infrastructure development, regional integration, digital connectivity, and sustainable transport systems.
The event also provides a platform for landlocked countries to share experiences, identify common challenges, and develop a renewed vision for inclusive economic progress.
Prime Minister Maïga’s presence underscores Mali’s commitment to advancing regional dialogue and securing greater support from the international community in overcoming the logistical and economic barriers faced by landlocked states.
