Authorities in Abidjan have launched investigations following a violent outbreak in the Yopougon district that resulted in the burning of a public bus and attacks on police officers.
The Public Prosecutor at the Court of First Instance, Braman Oumar Koné, confirmed that several suspects have been arrested, while efforts continue to identify and apprehend all those involved.
On the night of August 1, 2025, around 11 p.m., a group of individuals armed with machetes, clubs, firearms, and incendiary devices set fire to a bus operated by the Société des transports abidjanais (SOTRA), Ivory Coast’s public transport company.
The incident took place on the road near the fire brigade company at the Jessie Jackson Complex in Yopougon, western Abidjan.
The attackers, who concealed their identities behind balaclavas, also assaulted the occupants of a national police vehicle, causing damage to the vehicle and injuries to officers present. Police forces promptly intervened, managing to arrest two suspects on the scene.
Following a thorough sweep, additional arrests were made, and those detained are currently undergoing questioning.
The prosecutor emphasized that these actions constitute serious criminal offences and represent a significant threat to public order.
“The acts committed are particularly serious and fall under criminal law,” Braman Oumar Koné stated, underscoring the commitment of the justice system to pursue all perpetrators, accomplices, and instigators.
Authorities have pledged to exhaust every avenue to bring those responsible to justice, assuring the public that these disturbances will be met with the full force of the law.
The situation remains tense as investigations continue to ensure security and stability in the affected areas.
