A fierce fire swept through the Tassi Tedji Bani Zoumbou neighborhood in Malanville, Alibori department, on the afternoon of Monday, July 28, 2025, leaving a home severely damaged and a family’s possessions destroyed.
The blaze engulfed a room in a rented house, causing significant material losses, including two refrigerators, two motor pumps, two motorcycles, personal belongings, and various pieces of equipment.
Fortunately, no human casualties were reported, according to local Malanville radio station Sota FM.
The fire broke out between 3 p.m. and 4 p.m., when the children were alone at home. A tenant parent shared his distress, noting, “It wasn’t cooking time,” which led him to suspect an electrical short circuit as the possible cause.
“The exact cause remains unknown,” he said, reflecting the uncertainty surrounding the incident.
Despite the swift arrival and efforts of firefighters to control the inferno, the flames ravaged the room, leaving it completely destroyed. “The entire room went up in smoke. No items could be recovered,” the tenant lamented.
This incident has shaken the local community in Malanville, highlighting the vulnerability of many households to sudden disasters. Authorities have yet to announce any further investigations or support measures for the affected family.
As Malanville residents reel from the aftermath, the event serves as a somber reminder of the need for improved fire safety awareness and preventive measures in residential areas across Benin.
