Benin: Fake police commander sparks outrage with viral threat video on social media

Authorities in Benin have launched an investigation into a man identified as Léonard Aguiar, who falsely claimed to be the head of a non-existent law enforcement unit and issued threatening statements in a video that quickly circulated on social media.
In the video, Aguiar presents himself as the leader of an alleged “Brigade for Research and Intervention” and claims that his supposed unit has received orders to target so-called “social outcasts.
” He goes further to name individuals, accusing them of serious crimes—without offering any evidence.
The Republican Police swiftly responded to the video, clarifying that Aguiar is not a police officer and that the unit he claims to lead does not exist. “
The individual known as Léonard Aguiar is not a police official.
The brigade he refers to is entirely fictitious,” the official statement reads.
“His allegations are false and extremely serious.”
The police condemned Aguiar’s remarks as a blatant act of misinformation and incitement, underscoring that the sanctity of human life must never be undermined by such reckless threats.
Authorities emphasized that no one has the right to threaten or incite violence against others under any circumstances.
“This person’s comments are not only unacceptable but also violate the core values of our institution,” the police stated.
“They reflect only his own imagination and intent to spread fear and misinformation.”
Aguiar is now wanted for impersonating a public official and disseminating false information via electronic channels.
The Republican Police confirmed that investigative units are actively working to locate and apprehend him.
The authorities have urged the public to refrain from sharing or endorsing the video and similar content, warning that anyone involved in spreading such dangerous misinformation will be held accountable under the full extent of the law.
The official statement concluded with a strong appeal to the public to remain vigilant, verifying information through credible sources and rejecting content designed to provoke panic and instability.
